Donation for ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’

We are very proud to have donated timber frame and roofline products to a deserving family from Hartcliffe, Bristol, featured on the BBC One series ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ (aired 29th June 2017).  The products were used as part of a life-changing transformation to the Pollard family home to enable their son, Ryan to come home.

Ryan’s story:

Five years’ ago, Ryan was struck with a serious brain condition, aged just 19.  For 18 months, Ryan underwent surgery and treatment in Bristol before he was moved to a specialist care centre in Gloucester, where he has lived for the past three and half years.  His mum Rachel spends four hours a day, five days a week travelling from Bristol to see him while his Dad makes the 100-mile round trip on Saturday to bring him home for the day.

The build:

The house needed a single storey extension at the rear of the property with all the bespoke care provision that Ryan will need: physio space, wet-room, social space and the ability to access the entire ground floor.

How we got involved:

We answered a call for suppliers and volunteers posted on Twitter by the DIY SOS team, and later attended a trade day to view the site and meet the team.  After a few alterations, most notably changing the flat roof to a 15-degree pitched roof, we confirmed our supply of the timber frame with factory-insulated panels and fascia boarding.  We also formed the cut pitched roof and trimmed it out ready for the installation of three Velux windows.

We were supported in our efforts by long-term Taylor Lane Timber Frame sub-contractor, LT Timber Construction from South Bristol, who volunteered seven erectors to the build.  “As a local company when we heard what Ryan’s family were going through it was important for us to get involved,” said Ross Latham, LT Timber Construction.  “The support from Taylor Lane was fantastic and we have been able to make a huge difference to Ryan and his family’s lives.”

5/ 5 Stars

"Taylor Lane were key to the design process. They do all the engineering calculations...and tell you if something’s possible or not, calculate the truss requirements etc. "

"We have a long history with Taylor Lane. They have worked with Lovell and been part of our supply chain for well over 15 years, that I know to. When I have visited Hereford (on a number of occasions), it’s a welcoming business that’s open, honest and transparent on all matters commercial, design, technical. We quickly derived confidence that they were the right choice for us...and that’s been vindicated by performance onsite thereafter."

5/ 5 Stars

"We had worked with them [Taylor Lane] previously and were happy to continue that relationship knowing the quality of the frame and the service that we would receive."
