Engineered Wood Products

Our range of engineered wood products includes I-Joists, metal web joists, Ultralam beams, Glulam beams and floor cassettes.  All of these components are manufactured in a quality-controlled environment for precision, and aid the build process.

I-Joists

I-Joists

I-Joists, otherwise known as I-beams are a factory-made, structurally engineered timber product, providing outstanding strength and durability. The timber joist has an I-shaped cross-section comprising top and bottom flanges made of softwood or LVL (laminated veneer lumber) fixed to a tall vertical web of OSB (oriented strand board) or similar.

I-Joists are lightweight and easy to handle. They are incredibly strong in relation to their size and weight.  They can span six metres or more and can be installed in around half the time of a traditional softwood joist.

I-Joists aren’t prone to warping or shrinkage, making them the ideal choice for quiet floors! They can be used to build flat or pitched roofs and are suited to residential and commercial builds of all scales.

Metal Web Joists (Posi-Joist)

An engineered joist with a wavy metal web centre, Metal Web Joists are known by many brand names – Taylor Lane uses the MiTek Posi-Joist system. They are extremely strong combining the lightness of timber with the strength of a Posi-Strut steel web, and are easy to handle.

Far greater distances can be spanned than would be possible with standard timber products. The Posi-Joist system offers an unrestricted span up to 7.5 metres, a similar distance to that of an I-Joist. The open web design makes the installation of services and utilities far simpler and quicker, reducing both labour costs and time on site.

Each Posi-Joist is specifically designed for your project. By altering the flange widths Taylor Lane can produce a variety of designs to suit any performance specification. Our experienced in-house designers can answer any questions you have.

Posi-Joists aren’t prone to shrinkage or warping and can be used for flat and pitched roofs.

Ultralam Beams

Ultralam Beams

Ultralam laminated veneered lumber (LVL) is one of the strongest and most durable engineered timber products available in the UK.  It can support heavier loads and longer spans than comparable glulam or solid timber.

Ultralam LVL doesn’t crack and has minimal natural shrinkage, helping to produce quieter floors.  Dimensional stability, regardless of seasonal and environmental factors ensures high level accuracy for adjacent build elements.

A popular choice for both timber frame and traditional brick and block construction, Ultralam LVL beams are available in a wide range of sizes and are perfect for providing more space and achieving longer-spans.

Technical Details

Glulam beams

Glue Laminated Timber – more commonly known as Glulam – is a strong, structural engineered wood product with superior stiffness and dimensional stability. With exceptional strength, Glulam is ideal for long spans and load-bearing widths.

Glulam is manufactured by gluing together pieces of high-grade solid timber, with parallel grain, under heat and pressure, forming longer lengths and cross sections. It has an impressive strength to weight ratio while being easy to handle and retaining the aesthetic appeal of timber.

Straight, curved and shaped – Glulam can be formed to requirement and specification. It is a versatile and natural building material.

Taylor Lane can provide technical advice and structural guidance for Glulam products, based on years of design, manufacturing and erection experience.

Floor Cassettes

Floor Cassettes

An increasingly popular choice, floor cassettes can improve site safety and speed up the build process.

Cassette floor panels are manufactured using I-Joists or Posi-Joists (metal web joists) to meet the customer’s performance specification.

Lifting straps are attached to the cassettes for safe lifting for both transportation and on-site erection.

Floor construction should follow our standard party floor details. The decking material is subject to the requirements of the final floor. Taylor Lane typically uses CaberDek flooring from Norbord, other flooring materials are available.

We achieve the current requirements specified by Approved Document E: resistant to the passage of sound and adherence to Robust Detail E-FT-1 to ensure that site testing is not required.
