VE Day 75 Celebrations
To mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe, VE Day, our joint MD, Colin and his wife and Taylor Lane admin manager, Kath held a neighbourhood socially-distanced VE Day party.
The pair were due to be in Guernsey with their Jeep, taking part in the Liberation Day commemorations (9th May) but unfortunately this was cancelled due to coronavirus.
“We thought that this historic anniversary should still be marked,” says Kath, “…so we decided to hold a neighbourhood VE Day party.
“All of the houses in the Avenue, including ours, were flooded in February and some people have been moved into rented accommodation whilst restoration works are carried out. However, that didn’t stop a large number of our neighbours joining in and doing their own thing in their front gardens, on their driveways or on the pavement just outside their gates.
“There was lots of bunting and flags, and some 1940s music, including a tune or two from one chap’s wind-up gramophone, playing 78 speed records. Quite a few had also dressed for the occasion in 1940s style clothes.
“The weather was perfect and we were able to walk down the road and say hello to everyone from a safe distance.”
Colin and Kath also enjoyed a rare wartime treat – tinned peaches and evaporated milk!
The duo were due to feature on BBC The One Show VE Day 75 special but unfortunately, a poor WiFi signal scuppered a live link, so instead they provided images and video footage. One photograph was selected by popular historian and TV presenter, Dan Snow as his ‘favourite’.
