Building an outstanding reputation takes a great deal more. Barrie Lane and Colin Taylor, the founding partners of Taylor Lane, are justifiably proud of having built both over the course of the last 23 years. Since the company was founded in 1982, it has grown to become one of the country’s leading suppliers of timber frames to the construction industry as well as one of the largest employers on Hereford’s Rotherwas Estate. Currently, almost 90 staff work for the company on their four sites, the newest of which became fully operational last month. Barrie and Colin agree that hard work is a key ingredient, though not the only one, in the success of a business that is set to turn over £11 million this year. It’s an impressive figure for a business that was started with just £1,000 invested between the two men but the money was less important than the shared vision and commitment they put into the venture. Taylor Lane is a company that is remarkable not just for its success and its business philosophy. It is remarkable, too, that, in a credit-driven world, the finances of the business depend on another simple principle – of borrowing nothing, buying only what they can afford.
