Station Crescent, Craven Arms: South Shropshire Housing Association.

Station Crescent is an innovative development by South Shropshire Housing Association. The scheme consists of twenty dwellings which form a series of colourful curves between Craven Arms Station and the Shrewsbury Road, forming a gateway into Craven Arms from Station Approach.

The dwellings themselves are low energy and super insulated. Building Regulations govern the heat loss through the structure. In this scheme insulation has been invested substantially in the walls and roofs. The investment improves on the Building Regulations by 50%.

Passive solar energy created within the solariums will provide substantial energy savings to tenants. The solariums are 2-storey conservatories which are shaded to avoid overheating in the summer but allow winter sun to penetrate and heat the space. To take advantage of passive solar heating all dwellings are orientated towards the south.

A further innovation is the use of forced air which will take heat from the solariums in the winter and re-circulate it within the dwellings. In the summer it takes cooler air from the north face of the buildings to cool the dwellings.

The use of hot water solar panels on the roof will provide the tenants with free hot water between May and September. The gas boilers being provided for additional top up hot water during the Spring and Autumn period and to provide heating and hot water throughout the rest of the year. The boiler output has been set at 4kW.

Small bedrooms have the ability to be used as home offices. Low capacity baths and toilet cisterns coupled with showers contribute to reducing water consumption and the introduction of water butts to collect rain water for use in the garden will also reduce water consumption.
